Our Mission
Arabian Lights Dance Company Inc. is a 501C3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the art of raqs sharki (Middle Eastern dance), most commonly known as "belly dance."
Our mission is two fold:
First, we wish to provide students of raqs sharki with a public forum in which to perform as well as mentorship from more experienced dancers.
Secondly, we strive to present the art of raqs sharki to the public, to enlighten them as to the nature and culture of this vastly misunderstood art form. We bring entertainment and education to audiences who may not otherwise be exposed to this form of cultural diversity.
Our History
Arabian Lights Dance Company Inc. was founded in February 2006 by a group of enthusiasts who hoped to spread awareness and understanding of Middle Eastern dance. Under the direction of professional dancer, Athena, ALDC established a diverse membership of talented and dedicated dancers of all ages, shapes, sizes and backgrounds. Although ALDC was sad to lose Athena to her new home in Florida in 2009, we have continued to grow in the dance and look forward to many more years of shimmies!
Since 2006, Arabian Lights Dance Company Inc. has entertained a wide variety of audiences across DelMarVa and beyond. We have brightened the day of assisted living residents, demonstrated the fun of staying fit for a physical fitness expo, and even danced in an open field for an excited audience of astronomy buffs!
We are known for our enthusiasm for the dance, our creative choreography and stage dynamics, and our eagerness to teach our audience about the beautiful art of Middle Eastern Dance. Audience members complement us often on the unity we demonstrate on stage and the clear joy we express in our performances. This is because we love this dance and we love to share it with others.
